I Can Shine: I Can Bike Camp

LIU Post is a participating school in I Can Bike, a national organization that uses adaptive equipment, trained professionals and volunteers. With 75 minutes of instruction each day for five days, approximately 85 percent of participants learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently. Within days of learning to ride, many children exhibit independent behaviors for the first time ever, which helps them gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives.

Each participant with a disability and his/her typical peer is paired with a graduate student enrolled in LIU Post’s Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Psychology, or Speech-Language programs.

To be eligible to enroll, participants must be at least eight years old. They must have a disability but be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane and be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Participants should have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 250 pounds.

The fee for the camp is $200. Scholarships are available.
